Description

Programme for satirical revue show, Beyond the Fringe.

What's the story?

Beyond the Fringe was a ground-breaking British comedy stage revue written and performed by Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett, and Jonathan Miller.
Premiering in at Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre in August 1964 it brought together the finest talents from the Oxford Revue and Cambridge Footlights and became hugely popular in the West End, before conquering Broadway.
It made major stars of its four writer/performers and heralded the start of the 1960s satire boom, with TV programmes like That Was the Week That Was and magazines like Private Eye following on close behind.
Many of the member of Monty Python and other writers and comedians cite Beyond the Fringe as a major influence on their work.
The touring production arrived in Nottingham in 1964, but did not feature the four illustrious cast members. They were replaced by David Calderisi, John Dalby, Peter French and Roger Jerome.
The presence of Beyond the Fringe at the Theatre Royal Nottingham, as well as productions like Hair in 1970 demonstrate how the venue was keen to programme the latest ‘fashionable’ shows, rather than the perception that the venue during the 1960s was simply reclining in its Victorian and Edwardian past.
