Date

Description

Programme for 1945 production of the musical The Quaker Girl, with book by James T. Tanner, lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank, and music by Lionel Monckton.

What's the story?

The Quaker Girl first opened in London in November 1910 and ran for 536 performances. A major revival of the show took place at the London Coliseum in May 1944, followed by extensive touring until 1948.
Set in both England and Paris, the plot concerns Prudence, a young woman thrown out of her house by her devout Quaker parents for drinking a glass of champagne. Later, in Paris, her simple grey dress and bonnet become the height of fashion.
This production of The Quaker Girl was presented by major theatrical producer Emile Littler.
Some of his shows included 1066 and All That, Song of Norway and Annie Get Your Gun, plus revivals of The Maid of the Mountains, The Quaker Girl and The Desert Song.
Littler also presented more than two hundred Christmas pantomimes in London, as well as controlling the Palace Theatre in London from 1946 to 1983.
This programme was loaned to the Theatre Royal by Lesley Brown from a collection of theatre memorabilia owned by her late father-in-law William Gordon Brown, a keen performer and member of Nottingham Operatic Society.
