Description
Programme for Nottingham Operatic Society production of The Quaker Girl at the Theatre Royal in March 1935.
What's the story?
Three pages taken from the 16 page programme for The Quaker Girl, a popular early twentieth century musical by James T. Tanner, with lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank, and music by Lionel Monckton.
Images show front cover of programme, cast list and production photographs.
Collector Trevor Lee comments that this programme is special as its colour is so different from other Theatre Royal productions at that time, with Nottingham Operatic Society utilising a local printer for this one-off production.
This show is also notable as it features Constance Shacklock in the role of Diane.
Shacklock (1913 – 1999) was born in Sherwood in Nottingham and was involved with Nottingham Operatic Society during the 1930s. She later trained at the Royal Academy of Music and became a renowned international opera singer.
In 2018, Nottingham Operatic Society celebrated its 125th anniversary with a production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Theatre Royal having first established itself in 1893.
