What's the story?
Along with The Bing Boys Are Here and Chu Chin Chow, The Maid of the Mountains was one of the three biggest musicals presented in London during World War One, offering clear theatrical escapism to the war in Europe.
After a short try-out season, the show opened at Daly’s Theatre in London in February 1917 and ran for 1,352 performances. Over subsequent decades the show has continued to be revived successfully.
The show was directed by notable actor and producer Oscar Asche. A versatile performer and celebrated director, whose many Shakespearian roles included Sir John Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, later performed at the Theatre Royal in 1933.
