What's the story?
Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, The New Statesman was a satirical TV comedy about scheming Conservative MP Alan B’stard, played by actor and comedian Rik Mayall.
The TV series ran from 1987 to 1992, with a special broadcast in 1994 and this stage adaptation thirteen years later in 2007.
Mayall returned to play his role of B’stard, alongside Lysette Anthony, Helen Baker, Garry Cooper, Alexandra Gunn, Kamaal Hussain and the voice of Jon Culshaw, as the voice of Tony Blair.
Rik Mayall was an inspirational comedian, who rose to fame in the 1980s as part of the alternative comedy circuit and is known for his TV work in The Young Ones and Bottom. He died suddenly in 2014, aged 56.
