Title
The Danny La Rue Show - Programme, 1978
Date
18 April 1978
Description
Full programme for The Danny La Rue Show.
What's the story?
This 1978 production of The Danny La Rue Show was one of the Theatre Royal’s opening season highlights following its 1977 closure for refurbishment and re-building.
The season had opened with The Ken Dodd Laughter Show on 7 February 1978, followed by George & Mildred, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, Kent Opera, the Gang Show and John Hanson in Lilac Time.
Danny La Rue was a hugely popular entertainer and female impersonator throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Therefore, this two-week show would have been a big crowd-pleaser for this Theatre Royal re-launch.
There is a detailed two page biography of Danny La Rue in the programme, in which we learn that as a ‘humorist’ and born under the star sign of Leo “lions and clowns supply the motifs for the décor of his dressing room”.
The biography signs off in a grandiose way … “Little needs to specify the qualities which make Danny La Rue a superstar – his achievements make that appellation automatic”
Appearing alongside Danny La Rue were Mike Goddard, Wayne King, David Ellen, Christina Avery and Peter Eden.
