Description
Full programme ( four pages) for Babes Burlesque Company, a musical revue show, from 1885.
What's the story?
The Babes Burlesque Company or W(h)ines from the Wood is a satirical musical revue by Harry Paulton. A Victorian burlesque certainly does not have the more risqué cabaret connotations as it does today.
Willie Edouin and Lionel Brough were very successful actors and comedians at this time and partnered up to star together in this successful burlesque.
The production originated at Toole’s Theatre in London, which opened in 1882, under the management of J.L. Toole.
Previously known as the Charing Cross Theatre, its big claim to fame is staging JM Barrie’s first play Walker, London in 1892. However, it was forced to close in 1896 due to the noise of the theatre disturbing the patients of the nearby Charing Cross Hospital. The hospital subsequently then used the site to enlarge its own premises.
An interesting array of advertisements in this programme, including the ‘Grand Turque’ smoking mixture and Dr Budd’s Tonic Syrup for ‘weak and delicate children’.
