What's the story?
T. S. Eliot’s The Cocktail Party was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949, followed by successful runs in London and New York in 1950.
The play is a satire of the traditional British drawing room comedy, with darker, more absurdist elements.
Distinguished actor Alec Guinness originated the role of the Uninvited Guest in 1950, returning to the role eighteen years later in 1968, on tour and in London, a production which he also directed.
Also in the cast for this production were Pauline Jameson, Michael Aldridge, Nan Munro, Richard Leech, Mark Kingston and Eileen Atkins.
