Description
Nottingham Journal review of The Dog Watches, a war-time comedy-farce by Lt. Commander Ross Hutchinson.
What's the story?
The Dog Watches is a 1944 naval farce-comedy by Lieutenant Commander Ross Hutchinson.
As highlighted in this review, the Theatre Royal opening night on 11 December 1944 was a gala night with dignitaries including the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Nottingham and the Sheriff, plus Mr H.S. Sherwin, the organiser of the Nottinghamshire Service Comforts Fund, a local charity that raised funds for troops abroad.
Many service personnel were present at the show and each was given a complimentary packet of cigarettes.
The Dog Watches refers to the navy term for a work shift at sea between 4pm and 8pm, hence the reviewer’s comments that “the naval men in the house found the humours of The Dog Watches … even more laughable than the Army visitors, and heaven knows they laughed enough.”
