'Mad Wife' Coroners Court Re-enactment - Newspaper Article, 1945
Date
19 January 1945
Description
Nottingham Journal article on a Nottingham inquest that involved a re-enactment of a scene from Jane Eyre at the Theatre Royal.
What's the story?
A newspaper article about a coroner’s inquest into the death of Peggy O’Dare, an actress who six years earlier had appeared at the Theatre Royal with the Court Players in a stage production of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.
After a particular dramatic scene, it is claimed that O’Dare banged her head whilst leaving the Theatre Royal stage and the inquest looked at whether her fall in the scene resulted in her alleged subsequent off-stage accident.
Having witnessed a re-staging of the mad wife strangulation scene in the court, the coroner recorded a verdict of death of natural causes.
