Description
Full programme for Red Riding Hood, the Theatre Royal pantomime for 1950
What's the story?
This Theatre Royal production of Red Riding Hood is incredibly significant as it marks one of the early professional stage appearances of a 15-year-old Julie Andrews, in the title role.
Also in the cast, playing Jolly Jenkins is Tony Hancock (1924 – 1968). It was in the following year, in 1951, when his radio career began to flourish, becoming a cast member on Educating Archie.
Tony Hancock returned to the Theatre Royal in 1953 to play Buttons in Cinderella.
This Panto also featured spectacular flying dance sequences from performers in Kirby’s Flying Ballet.
One of these flying dancers was Gillian Haywood-Widdowson.
There are oral interviews with Gillian and rare images and cuttings of her time in Panto from her own private collection elsewhere on this site.
