What's the story?
Sardanapalus is a historical tragedy in blank verse written by Lord Byron in 1821. The play is set in ancient Nineveh in 607 BC and recounts the fall of the Assyrian monarchy. Byron dedicated the play to German writer, Goethe.
This production, directed by Theatre Royal manager Thomas W. Charles, appears to be a major spectacle on the venue’s stage, featuring one hundred performers, an increased band, a chorus of thirty and a grand ballet. This is all done twice nightly at 6pm and 8.30pm.
