Title

Cigarette - Programme, 1896

Date

27 April 1896

Description

Full programme for Nottingham Amateur Operatic Company show Cigarette, which opened on 27 April 1896.

What's the story?

Programme for Nottingham Amateur Operatic Company show in aid of Nottingham General Hospital, which played from Monday April 27 1896 for six nights.
This was Nottingham Operatic Society’s 4th show, the beginning of a long association with the Theatre Royal. They are still performing here regularly.
‘Cigarette’, a light romantic opera, was a recent piece, written in 1892 by Joseph Haydn Parry and first performed at the Theatre Royal, Cardiff in August of that year. It is funny that the proceeds for a show of this title went to the hospital!
The programme has a full cast list and admission prices. There is a ‘second price at nine o’clock’, allowing cheap entry later in the show. The theatre would have had separate entrances to the different parts of the theatre. The pit was standing room only and was entered under the stage .
The adverts on the programme are interesting and refer to many streets close to the theatre. Some of the businesses still existed in living memory, such as Finch’s Wools and the Turkish Baths.
