Title
Royal Gala Performance - Programme 1978
Date
6 June 1978
Description
Souvenir programme of a Royal Gala Performance in the presence of HRH Princess Anne to commemorate the official opening night of the refurbished Theatre Royal on 6 June 1978.
What's the story?
The official opening of the newly refurbished Theatre Royal in June 1978 was some months after the glittering first night in February. Its illustrious guest of honour, HRH Princess Anne, joined the great and good of Nottingham for a Gala Performance after a Civic Dinner.
The programme contains several advertisements for local businesses, including a full page promoting major Nottingham employer Players' cigarettes (perfectly acceptable in those times).
Max Bygraves headed the cast with Dougie Squires Second Generation, Wei Wei Wong and Anna Lou & Maria (who had appeared in a production of the Pied Piper ten years earlier).
Of particular interest is the one-page biography of Max Bygraves "The Max Story" detailing his poor cockney childhood and his road to success. " "We had butter on Sundays and a chicken at Christmas" says Max"
