Monsieur Beaucaire is a short novel by Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1900 and is set in Bath during the eighteenth century.
It has been adapted numerous times, including as a play in 1904, which received a Royal Command Performance at Windsor Castle before Edward VII.
It became an opera in 1919 and adapted twice for film - in 1924 starring Rudolph Valentino and in 1946 featuring Bob Hope.
Gerald Lawrence (1873 – 1957) was a popular British actor. Madge Compton was his third wife.
