Poster and radio ad for Bristol Old Vic production of Swallows & Amazons by Arthur Ransome.

What's the story?

The classic children’s book Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome was first published in 1930.
In 2010 Bristol Old Vic premiered a new musical version of the book, adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson, with music by Neil Hannon from the ban The Divine Comedy. The show was directed by Tom Morris, co-director of War Horse.
In 2011 the show played at the Vaudeville Theatre in London followed by a UK tour in 2012.

As part of Nottingham City Council’s Year of Reading project in 2012, during the run of Swallows & Amazons, the Theatre Royal’s Creative Learning team worked with local schools and offered free tickets to families, many of whom had never been to the theatre before. Feedback from children, parents and teachers was incredibly positive …

"Basically all the families loved it. Children loved the interactivity of it and parents thought it was very clever. Children particularly loved cannon balls and boats put out in the audience. Great use of props and music.”

“I personally felt it made what could have seemed a dated piece very engaging. I made a point of watching the audience in parts. All our children and parents were very engaged. All our children were talking about it on the coach, reading the programme and wanting to find out more about the book”

“Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to invite children and their families to the Swallows and Amazons performance yesterday. All the tickets allocated to our two schools were used - Glenbrook Primary and Highwood Player Junior - and the children and parents sat awestruck throughout.”

“The children were particularly interested in the stage production and direction - they loved the human special effects - diving into the water and spitting water out and found Roger to be very funny. At the interval the children were divided in whether they were on the side of the Amazons or the Swallows. It was a truly magical experience for the entire audience.”
