Promotional postcard for A Butterfly on the Wheel by E.G. Hemmerde and Francis Neilson and starring Dorothy Stephen.
What's the story?
Edward Hemmerde and Francis Neilson were two MPS who wrote this play about love and politics during the 1910 General Election. Therefore, it is not new to lament our modern MPs for not focussing solely on their parliamentary jobs.
From a review taken from the play’s opening in 1911 and quoted on stagebeauty.net Edward Hemmerde is described as “Athlete, playwright, politician and barrister, Mr. Hemmerde has won his spurs at all four. Yet the ordinary observer would place him in the order mentioned, for he is a splendidly built specimen of an English gentleman”
The title is a quotation from Alexander Pope's ‘Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot’ of January 1735.
