What's the story?
The Resistible Rise of Arturo was written by German playwright Bertolt Brecht in 1941. Chronicling the rise of mobster Arturo Ui in 1930s Chicago, the play satirises the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany in the years leading up to World War Two.
The play was not produced until 1958 in Stuttgart in Germany, two years after Brecht’s death.
As well as Griff Rhys Jones, other notable actors to play Arturo Ui on stage include Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Antony Sher, Leonard Rossiter, Hugo Weaving and Simon Callow.
