THEATRE LINKS UP WITH THE PAST:
‘Nottingham Theatre Royal’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk which starts on 23rd December has a unique link-up with the Pantomime of the same name 78 years ago.
The publicity material for the 1904 production by Howard & Wyndham at the Theatre Royal Glasgow featured coloured illustrations by artist Tony Gibbons, who was commissioned by Howard & Wyndham for many of their Pantomimes, which were first produced in 1888. The same artist was responsible for the ‘Half Past Eight’ shows, which were a major feature of the live theatre for several decades throughout the country.
Barrie Stead, Director of The Royal Centre, said, “Pantomime has a particular family appeal and I wanted our publicity to reproduce some of the traditional atmosphere and flavour. I found that the original illustrations for 1904 were quite unique in their style and I decided to use this, but as there was no possibility of locating the original artwork, we had to start from scratch, by using a small colour print for reference.”
The design and production of the Jack and the Beanstalk publicity material, which features Su Pollard, Stu Francis and Roger deCourcey, was completed by the Nottingham based advertising agency Alexander Colbear & Partners.’

Frankie Holmes (1922 – 2016), who played the Dame in this Pantomime, was born in Stapleford, Nottingham. He studied music as a boy and became an organist at St. Luke’s in Stapleford at the age of 14. This was the only Pantomime he was in at the Theatre Royal. He is most famous for the parts he played in ‘Little Big time’ and ‘Dad’s Army’.

Su Pollard, who played Jack in this Pantomime, was also born in Nottingham. This was her first Pantomime at the Theatre Royal. She is most famous for her parts in ‘Hi De Hi’, ‘You Rang M’Lord’ and ‘Oh, Doctor Beeching!’ on BBC TV. Su returned to Panto at the Theatre Royal 31 years later in Peter Pan in 2013, alongside Barney Harwood and David Hasselhoff.
