Description
Full programme for musical Little Mary Sunshine by Rick Besoyan and starring Bernard Cribbins, Joyce Blair and Patricia Routledge.
What's the story?
Little Mary Sunshine is an American musical that parodied old-fashioned operettas and musicals. Its Rocky Mountain setting and songs such as Colorado Love Call was a clear spoof of Indian Love Call from Rose Marie.
The production opened off Broadway in November 1959, followed by transfers to the Player’s Theatre and Cherry Lane Theatre. The show eventually closed in September 1962, after 1,143 performances.
After a pre-West End run, including this Theatre Royal week, the show opened in London’s West End in May 1962, but closed after just 42 performances.
The show has often been criticised for its stereotype depiction of native Americans.
This UK production is notable for an early stage appearance of esteemed film and stage actor Patricia Routledge.
