Date

Description
Newspaper cutting from Nottingham Evening Post for opening night of musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations .
What's the story?
Starring actor and singer Darren Day as Pip, along with Brian Glover as Magwitch and Nyree Dawn Porter as Miss Havisham, this musical version of Dickens’ classic novel Great Expectations was written by former Radio 1 D.J. Mike Read.
A version of the show had premiered at Theatre Clywd in Wales in 1993 and in a break with tradition was now the big non-Panto Christmas show for the Theatre Royal Nottingham for the 1994/1995 season.
The production was a big success and to celebrate its opening night, Hollywood style searchlights were projected into the evening sky. This Nottingham Evening Post article goes into more detail about the lights and the box office success of the show.
This newspaper cutting is from the private collection of Rebekah Pickering-Wood, a child performer in Great Expectations.
Links can be found on this archive to extensive oral history interviews with Rebekah, where from the audition process to performing on stage, she provides a vivid account of performing in these two shows, as well as an insight into the life of the theatre.
