Poster for stage musical of Singin' in the Rain
What's the story?
Based on the classic 1952 MGM musical, this 2014 stage production of Singin’ in the rain starred Maxwell Caulfield, Faye Tozer, James Leece, Amy Ellen Richardson and Stephanie Anelli.
The production opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in summer 2011 and transferred to the Palace Theatre in the West End in February 2012, where it received four Olivier Award nominations.
In order to create the famous Gene Kelly Singin’ in the Rain song and dance, the production used half a mile of flexible pipe work, a 10 tonne water tank and a water system that created a downpour from above and flooding from below the stage, ‘raining’ (and recycling) over 12,000 litres of downpour per performance.
In order for this to work on the famous Theatre Royal sloped stage, an anti-rake had to be built that levelled out the entire stage. This can create difficult sightlines for those at the front.
The photographs here show how the stage has to be built up to create a level surface for the water.
