Description
Selected pages from programme for 2009 tour of the National Theatre production of An Inspector Calls by J. B. Priestley.
What's the story?
An Inspector Calls by JB Priestley was first performed in September 1945 and examines class hypocrisies and responsibilities.
Stephen Daldry’s influential multi award-winning 1992 National Theatre revival emphasized Priestley’s political message, as well as removing it from its traditional drawing room setting to a post-1945 landscape, the era when Priestley was writing.
The programme notes provide an excellent history of the evolution of this production and its subsequent huge success.
Linked below is an oral history interview with Beverley Graham, who was one of the supernumeraries for a subsequent tour to Nottingham. She details a particular difficulty with the Edwardian house that is central to this production.
For this 2009 tour many of these extras (representing the Labour voting class from 1945) were drawn from the Theatre Royal’s own community theatre programme.
