Description

Behind-the-scenes photographs taken by photographer Alan Fletcher of Theatre Royal community theatre production of The School for Scandal by Richard Brinsley Sheridan.

What's the story?

The School for Scandal was the first production to be staged at the Theatre Royal Nottingham on 25 September 1865, therefore 150 years later it seemed right to revive the production as part of the venue’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
This new production was produced by the venue’s Creative Learning department and involved a community cast and costumes designed by students from Nottingham Trent University.
This production also sought to put the Theatre Royal itself as one of the ‘stars’ of the show by staging the show as a promenade production. Cast and audience moved from scene to scene, utilising the foyers, the portico, the green room and finally the actual stage itself, with the magnificent Phipps/Matcham auditorium as the set.
A preview performance took place on Monday 7 September 2015 for family and friends, enabling the company to see how the promenade elements of the show worked.
On Tuesday 8 September the production had its official first night. During the afternoon the company were called for ‘notes’ as well as rehearsing some key elements of the show. With a performance at 7.30pm many of the actors had to come in early in order to have their detailed make-up applied.
Photographer Alan Fletcher was commissioned to come in during this mid to late afternoon preparation time to document the production.
In these photographs you can see the design students from Nottingham Trent University organising and preparing their costumes, the make-up team hard at work and final rehearsals in the various Theatre Royal spaces that this production took place.
