What's the story?

As one of the venue’s most established touring companies, the Theatre Royal has enjoyed a very successful partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
2016 marked the 400th centenary since Shakespeare’s death. To mark this event the RSC embarked on one of their most ambitious touring productions to date.
Directed by RSC Deputy Director Erica Whyman, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation would feature a professional cast (including Ayesha Dharker, Lucy Ellinson and Chu Omambala) performing alongside amateur actors from a local company to the venue they were performing in, who would be playing the Mechanicals in the show.
Children from local city schools, namely Ambleside Primary School, Heathfield Primary School, Hempshill Hall Primary School, Old Basford School, Rosslyn Park Primary School and Whitemoor Academy, were also recruited to be part of Titania’s fairy train.
The Theatre Royal’s learning department worked alongside the RSC as part of the amateur theatre selection process and eventually actors were chosen from Lovelace Theatre Group to perform in Nottingham.
Based in Hucknall Lovelace Theatre describe themselves as a “small but dynamic and vibrant group engaged in the production of plays musicals and amateur theatre.”
Lovelace actors were Daniel Knight, Tom Morley, Becky Morris, Jen White, James McBride and Linda Mayes, plus director Pat Richards.
Over the course of several months Lovelace Theatre had the once-in-a lifetime opportunity to work with and perform alongside one of the most prestigious theatre companies in the world.
Following the show’s UK tour, A Midsummer Night’s Dream ran for several weeks at the RSC’s home in Stratford-Upon-Avon, in which all the local amateur companies who had performed on the tour returned to perform at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
These production images from the show feature the Lovelace actors and some of the local children.
